The Queen of Flowers
We walked, holding hands, in a garden of riotous color under a sun that showered everything in gold, stopping often to admire flowers that glowed like High Renaissance paintings. In the surety of the alignment of our hearts I glowed too; I could feel my petals shining.
We made our way slowly through the rows and ended up in a corner where a solitary rosebush grew. Unlike the profusion of beauty blossoming elsewhere, only one sorry rose bloomed on that bush - an awkward, graceless offering, an Aschenputtel in the drawing room. 'Look,' you said, pointing at it. 'It's you.'
I stopped glowing, my petals curling inward in a wave of hurt and shame. Summoning every bit of steel in my spine I laughed up into your smiling face as my heart struggled to expel the arrows you'd so carelessly volleyed there. We left for dinner soon after.
The next time you called I was unavailable. The time after that I ended it. You, hurt and puzzled, never got an explanation. But now, looking back, although you put it stupidly, clumsily, I find myself agreeing with you. I am the dark horse in a field of glittering champions, an unremarkable rose in a glorious garden of bedding flowers - but still, a rose. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
