Description A woman and a dog, barely detectable among the towering trees of Neahkahnie Mountain along the Oregon Coast, are headed toward a moment of enchantment. According to legends of the Coastal Indians (probably the Nehalem Clan of the Tillamook Tribe), Neah-Kah-Nie (often spelled Neahkahnie) Mountain is seen as a sleeping warrior, waiting to be awakened. In the tribal language, 'Ne' means 'place of' and 'Ekahni' means 'supreme deity.' Neah-Kah-Nie = 'the place of the superme deity.'The mountain, which juts 1600 feet above the beach, plunges into the sea at the north end of Manzanita Beach, bifurcating the beach and causing fog and clouds coming in from the north to be redirected out to sea, to come aground again around Rockaway Beach. This is why Manzanita is often known as 'the banana belt' of the North Oregon Coast.
Don Schwartz, Portland, Oregon Member Since September 2012 Artist Statement Photography is for me a dance with nature. It is the immersion in a landscape; the sharing of a habitat with nature’s creatures. It is the sense of being lost in the moment, where the passing of time goes unnoticed. It is the serendipity of capturing a moment in time that becomes a timeless moment. The quiet places, the places of simple beauty, draw me in – from the delicate splendor of dew dancing on an iris petal to the magnificent breadth of a gray whale slicing through the water. With my camera, I am a blessed witness in a field of splendor.
