The Becoming
Fairytales to the contrary, witches do not have the power to stop the work of that pitiless master of portraiture, Time. Pay no attention to Hollywood either. No witch can be maimed or killed by dousing her with water. I'm not melting. Water has nothing to do with it. The universe does not wash me into a puddle of green. A relentless sculptor, it chips away with no mind for anything but the truth of age.
Hammer and chisel expose rippled substrate once camouflaged by satin skin. Bits and pieces of once-enticing female attributes lose their underpinnings and proceed to sag in awkward postures; clothing doesn't fit the way it used to. My hands grow clawlike, the flesh reticulating into dizzying crisscross mazes. Sloyd knives carve runes on my face lines that tell the story of my living.
I waste no tears on this transformation. I stand before the glass and laugh. It is not a pretty girlish giggle, but a wry sardonic bark as I see I am become, at last, the crone all witches must become. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
