Artist Statement

"PAINTING WHAT YOU SEE"

I am an artist from the New York area.   I have enjoyed an active career as an illustrator and a graphic artist in the publishing field for the past 20 years.

While I did enjoy my career as an illustrator, especially since my work had much to do with educational programs, I always knew that I needed to get back to the fundamentals of painting from life and painting for myself in order to continue to grow as an artist.   It was all about "Painting What I See", and not what I know or not what someone else wanted to see.

By "painting what I see" or "painting the way I see", I endeavor to address two important issues at the same time.   One is the technical aspect of following the footsteps of the19th Century masters, mainly naturalists, realists, and tonalists who perfected the impressionistic vision by close association with impressionists.

The other is not as easy to define but in essence has to do with "seeing beyond the surface".   To understand the soul and history of the subjects and to put them on a canvas the way I see them.
