Description Thelowland nyalaor simplynyala(Tragelaphus angasii),is a spiral-hornedantelopenative to southern Africa (not to be confused with the endangeredMountain nyalaliving in the Bale region of Ethiopia). It is a species of the familyBovidaeand genusNyala, also considered to be in the genusTragelaphus. It was firstdescribedin 1849 byGeorge French Angas. The body length is 135195cm (5377in), and it weighs 55140kg (121309lb). The coat is maroon or rufous brown in females and juveniles, but grows a dark brown or slate grey, often tinged with blue, in adult males. Females and young males have ten or more white stripes on their sides. Only males have horns, 6083cm (2433in) long and yellow-tipped. It exhibits the highestsexual dimorphismamong the spiral-horned antelopes.
