Artist Statement My name is Hollie Hills, and I currently live in North Carolina. I took my first art lessons at the Notre Dame Novitiate in Ipswich, MA, on Saturday mornings. My teacher was Sister Vincent DePaul, who was magnificent!; gentle, soft spoken and encouraging. I have attended the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA, and the San Francisco Art Institute.

Montserrat remains my favorite school. The teachers' approach is nurturing and demanding without being hurtful. Mr. George Gabin taught me a about nuance and is may all-time favorite instructor. Ms. Barbara Moody introduced me to lots of different artists and nurtured and challenged my painting.

I paint from the cumulation of me; from my center; intuitively. What I want to know is, "What do you see?", "What do you think?", "Did I communicate anything to you?" If you want to hang it up and keep visiting with it then I have succeeded.

I love active color. Even when the subject is angry or painful, I want the painting to be beautiful. These layers of color, beauty , design, and subject allow the work to be appreciated on many levels. Whichever one(s) you choose to like is totally up to you.

I work with oils because of the colors I can mix. I love the smell of my medium. In the rest of my life, I am an avid recycler and re-user, but I won't give up my cadmium yellows!

How do I know when a painting is finished? When it tells me it's done.
