Blodeuwedd
It took me years to realize I was never going to be pretty in that way. You know the way I mean: born sophisticated, mysterious, graceful, small-boned, softly delicate, a bud about to bloom.
Until I did I yearned for lace and ruffles and all those other girly adornments some carry off like a second skin, and thus sadly misguided, wore them.
It was putting lipstick on a pig. I grew and grew and grew, long-boned, strong-boned; No frail flower I - more like an aggressive weed, the kind you notice straight off and can't wait to yank out of the garden.
I bought every myth the hucksters hawked trying to be a prom queen. But besides too big I was smart and loud and opinionated and never could get the hang of going along to get along.
Boys never asked me out. In fact, if they could avoid me they did. If they couldn't they sniggered and laughed before turning back to the pretty girls who knew exactly what to do right out of the cradle. I was never going to be that girl, and how I wish someone had just told me straight to my misaligned face.
And still I didn't get it. In my heart I was a flower, shyly blooming in an out of the way corner, craving tenderness, craving love, even as I stumbled and argued and laughed much too loudly.
Today, years after finally embracing my own unusual swanhood, you see me happy in my me-ness. I know I annoy some and frighten many, and those who worship the traditional will never love me. But in my heart I am still a flower, an exotic, intoxicating blossom still craving tenderness, craving love. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
