Artist Statement Any artist strives to express themselves through their work, hoping to share their insights and their experiences with those who witness their work. For most of his life, Randy has endeavoured to express himself through his artistic efforts. For him, this has been both challenging and rewarding. Randy’s work is a reflection of his interests and a desire to foster an appreciation of the world around us. Since the mid nineteen-eighties Randy has developed his style and talents into an award winning career, having won numerous awards, notably Ducks Unlimited Canada - “Artist of the Year” and having his work included in several prestigious exhibits, including annual invitations to the Federal Duck stamp competition. His paintings have sold and now hang throughout North America and Europe.
Randy was born in Simcoe, Ontario and was raised on a two hundred acre tobacco farm in Norfolk County. He attended Valley Heights Secondary School where he was fortunate to be a student of Ross Bateman, brother of famed Canadian artist Robert Bateman. It was through the encouragement of Ross that Randy pursued a career in the arts. Randy went on to study Landscape Design at Fanshawe College, in London, Ontario. For a number of years he worked in the landscape industry, but his interests always returned to painting those things that inspired him. Randy secured employment at Long Point Region Conservation Authority for a decade, where he was able to combine his interests in nature with his artistic talents as a graphics and exhibit designer.
Randy has been an active art teacher, sports coach and community arts collective member for numerous years. Having resided in Norfolk County for most of his life, Randy now makes Norwich, Ontario his home where he has been creating more artwork during his few opportunities. It is with the support of his children Amanda and Brendan, his mother, brothers and sisters, that Randy has had the fortitude to maintain his creative endeavours. Today he portrays a wider variety of subject matter, as he continues to develop his style and technique; something he feels is important in his growth as an artist. It is through Randy’s determination and persistence that he creates work to his level of expectation.
