Description One of the highest flying birds in the world, the bar-headed goose flies above the Himalayan Mountains when it migrates, at heights that may reach 30,000 feet. They are powerful fliers and have larger, more efficient lungs than many other bird species. Nonetheless, it remains a mystery how these geese survive the thin air and cold temperatures during their high-altitude journeys. Bar-headed geese prefer freshwater habitats such as bogs, open marshes, marshy lakes, or river wetlands, as well as wet grassy fields. They are found in much of Asia and migrate seasonally. Feral populations have been established in Spain, Belgium, and Finland, but regular sightings are also recorded in Canada and the United Kingdom. During the breeding season, bar-headed geese can be found in in Mongolia, western China, Kyrgyzstan, eastern Afghanistan, and northeastern Pakistan. In winter, bar-headed geese migrate across the mountains to their wintering range in central Pakistan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and southern China. These are very sociable birds that gather in large flocks and will mix with other waterfowl, especially other types of geese. Bar-headed geese are primarily herbivorous and graze on a wide range of plant materials, including grasses, grains, roots, stems, seeds, and berries. About the Artist: Spadecaller (Matt Schwartz) is the pseudonym he uses for his visual art, writing, poetry, and video creations; initially, the name came about by his direct approach on subjects that focus on humanitarian issues that impact our world today. He's known to call a spade a spade.
In the late 1950’s, Spadecaller’s formal training in traditional oil painting techniques commenced. He was eight years old, when he started private painting lessons. Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother, who has since passed away, nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with many of the tools and circumstances to launch his creative journey. Memories of art exhibitions in New York City that his mother introduced him to continue to motivate his quest for excellence. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York. As a realist painter, he strives to capture the beauty of nature and the soul of humankind. Due to the onset of chronic illness in the late nineties and with the advent of image editing software, he turned to creating digital hand painted images, mixed media and photographic art - fusing these into an art form worthy of the same gratification that he had once found in oils.
