Roistering
There, in the corner of the Risn Dubh, meltinginto dark panelling I sat, sipping Jameson's, chasing it not that it needed chasing, mind you, the smooth and mellow peatdew evanescently caressing my tongue, the elusive spirit of the damp green earth liquefied, distilled into those pale drops of heaven with sturdy pints of Guinness, one swallow after another. Loud music swirled round in smoky wisps, as, smile pasted on face showtime, you know! I laughed and chatted lightly, amiably, meaninglessly.
The only hint of you was in my too-bright eyes.
Only a seer could have guessed their glistening sprang from a dark reservoir of sadness endlessly replenished with memories of you never a drought there, anam cara instead of from the drink, as we clinked pints, shouting 'Slinte!' to the unfeeling, immovable rafters. They all sang 'The Wild Colonial Boy' but you and I were lying sprawled on emerald grass, kissing carelessly in front of all the world. With fiddle and pipe, drum and guitar laid on the wooden stage at last, the dream dissolved and there I sat once more, the dark arms of the black rose withering, petals curled round me like stifling wool. Out into the hot thick night I took my leaden body, carrying you, as usual, in the rucksack saved for vain regrets, wishing the August moon would swallow me and save me from this sorrow or, failing that, that I could make my way down to the glimmering saltsea harbor and toss that pack to Davy Jones for safekeeping, far away from my weary heart. 1998, renewed 2011 Regina Coeli deWinter
