Bob Wood, Shreveport, LA
Member Since September 2008
Artist Statement Bob first became seriously involved in photography in 1979, when he finished a
draft of his doctoral dissertation on the history of Albuquerque and was looking for
an outlet for his creative energies. Among his subjects were the New Mexico
desert, his parents' home on Terra Ceia Island in Florida; City Park in New Orleans, where he lived for a year; and the bayous, flowers, and old buildings of
Shreveport, Louisiana. His favorite photographic subjects are scenes of ordinary life which are so charged with feeling and arouse so much awe that
the mysterious essence of our world shines through.

His career has been as varied as the subject matter of his photographs. In the
1960s he graduated from Vanderbilt, earned a master's degree in English at the
University of North Carolina, and taught English at the University of Tennessee at
Martin. Wanting to better understand the country, he entered the graduate
program in American Studies at the University of New Mexico and took courses in
several different departments. After earning his Ph.D., he worked as a housing
planner in Metairie, Louisiana, before returning to Albuquerque, where he held
positions as a technical writer, a managing editor for a database and a real estate
appraiser. In 1992 he earned a master's in Library and Information Science at
Louisiana State University, and in 1993 he began working as a reference librarian
at the LSU Medical Center, now the Health sciences Center, in Shreveport.
Wherever his path has taken him, Bob Wood has appreciated the beauty of the
sights around him and has used his camera to share what he has seen.
