Rose Dying
I gaze out the window at the rosebush in the garden - now sere, almost leafless in the grip of winter-chill remembering its summer lushness, how it was clustered thick with blooms of gilded antique ivory with a scent as heavenly as angels' breath held within petals of rough silk, not quite gauzy but almost.
All dead now, those roses, lifejuice sucked out by Jack Frost, who, laughing, shredded what was left and scattered it, an offering to Aeolus.
I look away, feeling old and spent, as if Jack, stealthy dementor that he is, had stolen into my bed, sucked out my lifejuice too. Staring at my hands, the thin skin stretched and wrinkled, I think back to summer when I was fair and fresh, perfumed with youth, convinced I was immortal. Now gripped by that same winter-chill, I know that soon enough I will be shredded, ashes scattered to the wind. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
