The Relict
Once upon a time, (forgive the drab cliche; I am old and tired and cannot think how to put it another way), in a far-away life, I was surrounded by others like me.
We were adventurers - fearless, eager to challenge and explore. The world was an unfolding landscape, full of delight and surprise. Nothing was impossible; in our brave optimism we were, we thought, immortal.
That bright circle shrank. In their inevitability, time and experience disabused many of this foolery. Some embraced the safe; others abandoned what they could not control, retreating into the silence of bitterness. Careless overindulgence took some; others, in the madness of despair, chose the final exit.
With those who kept faith I blundered on, convinced if we persevered nothing could keep us from achieving our hearts desires. Through mud and blood we slogged, eyes on a far-away rainbow that was often a mirage.
The ranks of this small army, too, were thinned. One day, standing in a chill wind in an open field, I looked around and found myself alone.
Of all those who once shone more brightly than all the constellations in the gentle dark, I am the last one left; it is a terrible fate. Which is worse -the loneliness of losing one's tribe, or the burden of being the repository of memories of such grandeur that no one who was not there would believe them? ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
