Artist Statement uS is the pseudonym for the Outsider Art duo of Brent Bumgarner and Chris Johnson. Bumgarner, a blind quadriplegic from an automobile accident in February of 1999, works in the digital realm using a USB pen with his mouth to draw, type, trace, and "paint" in various image editing programs. Johnson has the more organic role, whether it's scouring the internet for images to sample or wheat-pasting their work up at local graffiti spots, he substitutes for Bumgarner's disabilities.
The childhood friends formed uS in 2005 from a convalescent home in Asheville, NC after an argument while trying to write an email with speech recognition software. Since then they've created hundreds of works, published a book, and worked with the few non-profit organizations that support stem cell research.
