Artist Statement Biography: I was the youngest of seven siblings and the first to be born in a hospital. My first home was an old house in a small coal-camp in Raleigh County called Glen White. Both of my parents were born on very rural farms and weren’t able to complete high school, as they were the eldest and assigned duties to support their large families. My father was a coalminer in Wyoming County and my mother never worked outside the home. When my father became disabled from a mining accident, he turned his limited energies to gardening and walking in the woods, sharing his vast knowledge and love of the mountains with me. Even though he is long gone, I still love being outside, believing somehow that his spirit is still wandering the forests, sharing old memories and creating new ones with me.
Mission: I have always felt compelled to carry a camera with me at nearly all times and often will glimpse a scene that I believe needs to be captured. I have, at times, pulled-off the road immediately, made U-turns and went back, or mentally marked a spot for later in order to take a picture. After amassing thousands of pictures, family and friends have convinced me that I should share the pictures that I take. I feel that the people of southern WV have a tendency to take for granted the beauty that is our Appalachian mountains. I want to capture the beauty of our state, both the obvious scenes that we tend to ignore as we move through our busy day and the ones that few have the time to find, and share them with everyone.
