In El Salvador, it is only present as a vagrant nowadays; its only local breeding population is in the Cordillera Nahuaterique. Its natural habitat is subtropical and tropical moist montane forests. It prefers pine-evergreen and pine-oak woodland between 1,200 and 3,500 meters above sea level, occasionally lower,or between 4,000 feet and 10,000 feet. Unlike some rarer trogons, this species shows some adapability to human land use and has utilized coffee plantations with suitable shade trees like oaks.
