Description Pictured is the National Aquarium in Baltimore. At rest alongside the aquarium is the USS Torsk, a World War Two submarine that also served during the Cold War. On August 14th, 1945, the USS Torsk sank the last Japanese worship in World War Two, a Kaibokan type escort vessel in the Sea of Japan. The Torsk was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on December 15, 1971 and was transferred by the US Navy to the State of Maryland in 1972. Today, the USS Torsk is part of the 'Historic Ships in Baltimore'. On January 14, 1986, the Torsk was designated as a National Historic Landmark. She'll be around for a long time. The National Aquarium in Baltimore, formerly known as the Baltimore Aquarium, opened in 1981. Home to over 750 species of aquatic and marine life, the National Aquarium in Baltimore (NAIB) has a mission of inspiring marine conservation efforts. Through the years, many publications have ranked the National Aquarium in Baltimore as the best or among the best aquariums in the country. It's located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor near the Baltimore World Trade Center.
