Bad Dream
Last night I dreamed of Portland Head, a place visited only once, with you, my first wrong choice in a procession of unsuitables.
Why would I dream of that night on the cliffs, the wind whipping clouds into a froth and biting through my summer sweater - too light for Maine's fall - you silent and morose the way you always were after seeing your mother?
I never miss you in my consciousness. The memories of our great mistake are barely serviceable as such, more like smears of neural error than of truth, cringeworthy fragments of my introduction to temptation, sex, self-loathing.
Many more mistakes were made; perhaps, even in my waning, I will make more, though I think I've mastered most of my stupidity.
But let me thank you for the highlight of the years we wasted, the only legacy of you I cherish: watching the grease slide down the dingy wall of your apartment, shards of cheap china caressing my bare feet, after having thrown that plate of food at your head. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
