Artist Statement Drea Peters was born March first, 1988; in Englewood, Colorado. Raised by a printer, sign maker, pattern maker, and wood worker she was always encouraged to create. As a child Drea chose to pursue the performing arts though she drew constantly. Drea acted and sang in a troupe called Colorado Productions under the instruction of Debbie Buttars. The stage cleared Drea’s mind, but never made the points she wanted to. She felt creatively stifled, unless her medium was visual, raw, unadulterated.
Passion for the arts never ceases. Drea graduated from Highlands Ranch High School in 2006 and leaped haphazardly into college the next semester. She was accepted into the University of Colorado arts program as a Theatre, Film, & Television Major. In school experimentation and perspective gave her art new meaning. Dabbling in mixed media and discovering a Meuse, her soon to be husband Seth, Drea unearthed her own personal surreal style called Active Flash. Active Flash utilizes a series of tattoo inspired symbols to tell an emotional story through focus and movement. Unfulfilled emotionally through the creation of art alone; Drea left school as to start a family.
After giving birth to a spectacular baby boy, Drea’s imagery abandoned the twisted and obscure for more intellectual and meaningful statements. Inspired by the Earth shattering messages of Colorado Slam Poets like Andrea Gibson, Young American Eddie, and Lusifury Drea began to paint with ferocity. During the winter of 2008 she was hospitalized with respiratory problems and was left without a voice. Unable to perform, her passion for the brush was reinforced. Once actively painting, a close friend gave her a set of liquid water colors. She finally began to create the pieces that had been trapped in her mind for so long.
Today Drea lives in Aurora, Colorado with her beautiful family and continues to further the art of visual expression. Be the surface human, accessory, canvas, etcetera Drea creates an invigorating escape for the mind and dazzling feast for the eyes. “The universe teaches us amazing things every day. It is just a matter of what we do with those lessons.” –Drea Peters
