Description The pay phone, invented in 1891, was once a very important part of the American landscape. However, as cell phones gained in popularity, their numbers dwindled and some thought they would go the way of the dinosaur. However, during Hurricane Sandy, when many cell towers were out, the pay phones that still remain became a lifeline for many people. Now, there is beginning to be a renewed interest in pay phones but with a new twist. New York City has partnered with PTS to convert public phones into WiFi stationsso pay phones may not become obsolete after all.
