Artist Statement LILI VANDERLAAN

Lili Vanderlaan was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
At the age of 18 she left the Netherlands to live in Israel. There she completed a four year sculpting and pottery course at Tel Chai. For two years she taught sculpting and pottery at the Jordan Valley Regional College.
When she returned to the Netherlands in 1980 she stopped teaching to dedicate her time to sculpting, drawing, painting and last but not least to her family.
In 1990 she and her family immigrated to Alberta. Since than they lived in Ardrossan, Barrhead and Millet where they reside since 1995.

Lili can be inspired by the simple and intricate natural shapes and structures, creation itself.
Through analyzing these shapes to interpret them anew and to combine them she makes her works of art. She also gets inspired by many other things like communication, processes, feelings, moods, thoughts, emotions, architecture and other artwork.

In commission of private collectors, the Dutch Marine Corps, commercial and non-commercial institutions she completed fired clay sculptures and ceramic and painted murals, bronze sculptures and paintings.
For the last 4 years Lili has been taking her work to the Artwalk on Whyte and last year to the Taste of Edmonton. She enjoys the direct interaction and to hear the comments and remarks of the many different people and children that come by at those events.

Lili sculpts mainly with clay but uses any other medium if called for.
She has completed works in bronze, plaster, polyester and cement.
For her paintings she uses acrylic paints.
She sometimes uses paint on her sculptures.
In her collages she may use anything and everything usual and unusual you can imagine like milk cartons, paper bags, wire, shells, buttons, clay, stamps etc.

Commissions for indoor or outdoor sculptures,
ceramic murals or
painted murals are welcome.
