Description Scoria is the name given to the reddish rock found throughout Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It's not true scoria (which is volcanic in origin) and is actually the result of prairie fires. Ancient coal seams would catch on fire, burn (sometimes for decades), and bake the surrounding sands.
