Artist Statement For over 15 years I have been using bamboo to create two dimensional images that have a three dimensional look and feel. When I first started out, I worked with wood. One day I stumbled across bamboo in pursuit of wood for my carving, and never turned back. Through experimentation, trial and error, I have developed and refined a technique that I am pleased with – resulting in bamboo art creations.
As a native of Nigeria and having spent almost a decade in Jamaica, both environments offer an unlimited supply of this renewable resource. Its use has no negative impact on the environment and this is one of the many reasons I enjoy using bamboo as a medium. Although not as common in America as it is in those environments, bamboo continues to be readily available, as it grows very rapidly. An added benefit of its use it that it is very flexible yet strong and helps me to render intricately designed works of art, allowing me to share my thoughts and vision with the collectors of my work.
Due to my diverse background, I enjoy incorporating images of the tropics and every-day life of Jamaica and Africa into my works. I am equally inspired by American culture and have a passion for creating structural images, musical works and abstracts.
Each hand crafted image is intricately constructed by stripping and cutting individual pieces of bamboo with basic tools such as razor blades, scissors and tweezers, and carefully adhering them to a fabric background. Many ask if the process is Marquetry, Inlay or Intarsia. I simply call it Bamboo Art.
