'I have told you of my admiration for all things Japanese,' he said, 'and I am making a remembrance of those dishes over there -' here he lifted his pencil and pointed at a glass-windowed cupboard - 'so that when I return home I might be able to find some like it.'I got up to look more closely at the crockery that had caught his eye. What he was sketching was a stack of wide shallow bowls, quite plain but very colorful and beautifully made.'They are lovely, Vincent,' I said. 'Do you think you will find any like these in France?''Oh I think I can manage to ferret out some similar,' he answered. 'I know of a few shops that import from the east. And if all else fails I can send the drawing to Theo and ask him to look for me.'Satisfied with the sketch, he closed the notepad and got up.'It's time for me to go,' he said. 'If I manage to purchase the dishes I will let you know.'As so often happens in dreams, Vincent melted away and I awoke. As glad as I was to have run into Vincent again, I was happy to be done with that store once and for all.Last night I saw Vincent, albeit briefly, once again. In the middle of a dream about traveling in Europe suddenly I was standing in a largish kitchen next to a glass-fronted wall cabinet. Vincent materialized at my side, smiling.'I am making good on my promise,' he said. 'I have found the dishes.'That was all he said, and the next moment I was awake. I jumped out of bed and immediately started to work on what I saw in Vincent's kitchen. Here are the Japanese bowls as best I remember them from my dream. ~ Excerpted from a story about Van Gogh copyright 2014 RC deWinter
