Artist Statement Bryan Rutland was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1974. Bryan is a self-taught artist first developing his skills as an illustrator, designer, and starting in 1999 found a true love in painting. Bryan is also an accomplished tattoo artist.
Bryan’s style is extremely intense and spontaneous. He works on large surfaces so he is able to completely engulf himself into the painting, which he is creating. His mediums consist of oil paint, acrylics, spray paint & oil markers on canvas & wood, and is known to paint with anything laying around and especially likes using his hands. The fast and physical manner, which he paints, enables him to be free of inhibitions allowing his subconscious to create without censorship or judgment. “My painting began more out of necessity rather than choice. I don’t paint with a preconceived notion or idea. It is a very emotional, physical, and subconscious journey for me that surprises me every time.”
“The paintings seem to take on a life of their own, I am merely an outlet. My paintings are very much about the ‘now’. It’s as much a physical process as an aesthetic one. Nothing is purposeful, nothing contrived. I believe that in letting go of pre-determined thoughts and ideas that a more true sense of expression is able to come through. My goal is to create something truly honest, something that has not yet been created and to do that I believe you need to empty your mind. You need to see like it is your first sunrise, breathe like it is your first gasp for air. A child’s mind is only as pure. You must first regress in order for any real substantial progress or else I believe you are just building on top of what has already been done, instead of creating your own path”.
Seeing as a majority of people can’t fit these large paintings into their homes Bryan has begun a community art project of cutting those large pieces down to size, therefore allowing multiple people to share in a piece of the painting. “I love the idea that more than one person can have a piece of the same painting. I hope that it will create a sense of community and open up a dialog between these people knowing that others are out there with a piece to their puzzle.”
In addition to his own paintings Rutland has worked with visionaries like photographer/director of “RIZE”, David Lachapelle (www.davidlachapelle.com), and writer/director of “Hellraiser”, Clive Barker (www.clivebarker.com), as well as designed for fashion labels like L.A. based Eisbar, Kangol NYC, and L.A. bands The Nikhil Kohrula Band (www.nkband.com), The Distants (thedistants.net) and Apes of the New Millennium. As well as NYC based rap artist Little Vic and Orena Records.
Bryan Rutland’s paintings have been seen in galleries and venues in Los Angeles, his mural work on walls and ceilings in New York, and now he has brought his enthusiasm and style to the New England Seacoast area.
