bandaid
another night with toothpicks in the eyes no sleep and no relief from the humming hamsterwheel in my brain at least as diabolical to the mind as poe's pendulum to the body
not quite dawn and all i can think to do is run to the sea whose unfailing rhythm driven by the faithful diana will reset me
whose saltperfumed air will fill my lungs and ride the neverending loop of my body's bloody subway flushing my heart (constricted as it is by the dreary encrustation of the petty the quotidian the goddamned smugness of the unthinking self-satisfied) clean
the sun is a pale trembling thing in a stormcloud sky an unquiet dawn splashed otherworldly as if vincent had reached down and laid the innards of his soul across the horizon
the lowtide breakers batter the black and broken rock as i stand dysfunctional but breathing wishing to god and the devil i had enough money to buy my way out of this cage or failing that was young and beautiful so i could fuck my way out
but that's all a fairytale god the devil money youth and beauty even diana who hides her face in shame none of it exists in my world
then the rhythm kicks in and the salt makes its rounds and i am calmed ticking a welloiled watch gears once again sliding smoothly
and as the first fat raindrops begin to fall i make my way back to embrace the ephemeral sleep of the temporarily well-adjusted ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
