it still stands crowning the northernmost outcrop of the island that great phallic monolith interior circled with stairs exterior turgid and red right to the tip where once again light gushes in a display of dominance over its domain
i am here for the first time in many years having never thought to return to this place freighted with cargo not yet jettisoned but my hejira has begun
since i am condemned to live and must until my thread is snipped i will face old ghosts look them in the eye unwavering and lay them in their graves for good and aye
this haunted spit of land is my first stop of many so here i stand naked to the soul unflinching unpacking the resident pain that unnoticed by the carefree pilgrims flocking to this playground by the sea blankets every step of this my personal trail of tears
and shredding that portion of the blanket i throw it handful after handful into the waves not caring if neptune himself rises from the deep outraged as i litter his kingdom
when i am done purged of this portion of sorrow i turn to continue to the next placeholder of pain
and after i will visit the next and the next and the next every remaining pocket of memory shrouded by sorrow to bless them all with my scraps until the blanket is no more ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter Old Barney stands, once again proudly lit, in Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
