another august
sleep eludes me these sultry summer nights windows open to the velvet dark i drown in a carnival of scent a perfumed mlange of freshmown grass and honeysuckle summersweet and phlox swirls invisibly as i chase sleep around the mulberry bush of worry
surrendering to the inevitable i sit in the shadows awaiting the dawn but when it steps onto the stage of the sleeping world it does so not with a triumphant entrance but tiptoeing reluctant almost aggrieved a sullen steelgray curtain broken only by clouds that portend showers
the flower basket i hung outside the picture window is the only gaudy break in the gloom today there will be no sitting outside wondering why i am not like the rest of the happy world enjoying the caress of the sun on the sand or the golf course or the lunchtime sidewalks where the temporarily-liberated stroll to cafs or coffee bars to trade the latest office gossip
i am relieved rain promises no screeching children running wild on their gated lawns no beach traffic no feeling guilty for closeting myself in an upstairs room to avoid the heartache of another sunny day spent alone ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
