Description In 2003 I watched the sunrise from the exact same spot, except this time they had built a stone wall outside the observation shack. I was better prepared this time: a sleeping bag, a down jacket, gloves, a beanie, and a better camera. I drove up the winding road after midnight, going to fast through the clouds that hid black-and-white cows standing on the pavement. When I arrived there was only one other person there and the Milky Way beamed down on me like swirling Christmas lights. I tried sleeping, but it was still too cold, my body had already adjusted to seventy degree weather not below freezing temperatures, so I hardly slept. I went out early, the parking lot was already full and waited for the sunrise. I took photo after photo as my fingers grew numb, two of them tingling from an encounter with frost bite as a child, but I waited. The sun came up and I was disappointed. It wasn't as rewarding as the first time, I wasn't able to recapture the feeling of 'Sunrise Above the Clouds' but then I realized that it was a new day with a beauty of all its own. I put my camera down, jammed my thinly-gloved fingers into my pockets and watched.
Matthew Parry, Anchorage, Alaska Member Since December 2008 Artist Statement I have combined my passion for photography with my love for travel, the outdoors, art, and beauty. I like vivid colors, capturing things that most people don't particularly notice as they walk by, the grandness of planet earth, and the rich diversity of humankind.
I work in tourism in Alaska, which I love because I get to show people the majesty of the Last Frontier and it allows me to travel during the winter while I slowly work on my next novel.
For the most part my galleries are divided up by geographical location, although I combined some of my favorites into the gallery with the same name. Leave a comment if you like a specific photo or gallery. I'm trying to get a feel for what people like. Thanks for visiting and come back soon as I'll be adding pictures from my current trip to Hawaii. Also, check out my talented sister's paintings at www.juliettecaron.com.
