Laura Lee Art, Westminster, SC Member Since February 2016 Artist Statement I first remember drawing when I was 4 years old, it was fun. In the 3rd grade I won second place in a city-wide art contest for my crayon drawing of children caught in a Florida thunderstorm. As an adult, I was the sole artist in a public art show where I displayed and sold ink, oil and watercolor paintings. I also received commissions for artwork.
Moving from Orlando, FL to the beautiful upstate of S. Carolina, with its mountains, forests and rivers, I was inspired to find a new way to create artwork. I began drawing with pastel pencils. I discovered that the pencils gave me a lot of control and I was able to use my fingers to mix and blend dynamic colors right on the drawing paper.
I now use a combination of pastel, color and charcoal pencil in my artwork. At times I pull out my acrylic paints and use them to highlight aspects of my drawings.
