Description The closer you look into things...the more you'll see. I have found this particularly true in nature on bark and leaves. When you view them from a distance, you see one level of patterns and textures. The more you focus in, the more details within the patterns become visible. If you want to get crazy and bust out the microscope, then that's a whole different ball-game. I didn't quite feel the urge to work microscopically on this one, but I was thinking a lot about depth and layers. With the patterns on this leaf, I started pretty big, and just kept working them smaller and smaller until something more became visible...
Phil Lewis, Boulder, CO Member Since October 2007 Artist Statement Throughout my life I have always felt a special connection to nature, and being outdoors inspires me to create. The amazing scenery in Colorado has certainly fueled this inspiration, and the surrounding landscapes appear frequently in my work. In addition to drawing the things I see around me, I also like to draw the things I come up with on my own. To imagine is the most fun.
Lately I have been developing a style of artwork that combines pen drawings and digital design. I will start out with black line drawings and then color them in with Sharpie and Prismacolor markers. I then scan my drawings into Photoshop and re-brush some of the sections, add shading, effects, and adjust the colors until they “pop” as much as possible. I then print the images digitally on fine-art canvas. The resulting media is a hybrid pen-drawing / digital-canvas, which ends up looking like a giant piece of candy stuck to the wall.
I am truly humbled and grateful for the ability to create this art, and through it, I hope to bring as much color and light into the world as I can.
Thanks for viewing. Have a great day.
