Description There is something about Giraffes that I find facinating. They are such huge animals, yet they are so mellow. Not out to cause a scene, they just hang out in the shade and munch leaves all day. What is a giraffe really? Part horse, part Koala Bear? Long necks, big ears, horns??? Whatever the case, I find them interesting. I also have these African giraffe sculptures I often find myself staring at. They have moved with me everywhere I have lived in the past few years, and they always make the place feel like home. The Giraffe Project is a tribute to my giraffe sculptures, and giraffe lovers everywhere.
Phil Lewis, Boulder, CO Member Since October 2007 Artist Statement Throughout my life I have always felt a special connection to nature, and being outdoors inspires me to create. The amazing scenery in Colorado has certainly fueled this inspiration, and the surrounding landscapes appear frequently in my work. In addition to drawing the things I see around me, I also like to draw the things I come up with on my own. To imagine is the most fun.
Lately I have been developing a style of artwork that combines pen drawings and digital design. I will start out with black line drawings and then color them in with Sharpie and Prismacolor markers. I then scan my drawings into Photoshop and re-brush some of the sections, add shading, effects, and adjust the colors until they “pop” as much as possible. I then print the images digitally on fine-art canvas. The resulting media is a hybrid pen-drawing / digital-canvas, which ends up looking like a giant piece of candy stuck to the wall.
I am truly humbled and grateful for the ability to create this art, and through it, I hope to bring as much color and light into the world as I can.
