Artist Statement WAYNE RODNEY
Wayne Rodney, born 1977, is a fine artist who specializes in Surrealist Painting and Pen & Ink Drawings. Wayne has been exhibiting and selling artwork in his homeland Jamaica since 1999. Most recently, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission at the National Visual Arts Exhibition, 2005, awarded Wayne a Bronze Jamaica Festival Medal for the painting "Red Dragon" and a Certificate of Merit for the painting "Invest".
Under the curatorship of Jacqueline Hussey-Pearson, Wayne Rodney along with Michael Robinson, Audrey Lynch and John Campbell participated in the historically longest running group exhibition titled "Caravan" at the Red Bones Café, Jamaica in 2000. The exhibition "Caravan" received local media coverage and was well received by the public. The first of it's kind - it became forerunner to the success of subsequent exhibitions at this venue.
Son of the painter George Rodney, a major contributor to the development of abstract art in Jamaica, and a mother who also paints, Wayne has been making art since he was able to hold a pencil in his hand at the age of three. Today, Wayne makes his own contribution to the Jamaican Art Movement and Surrealist Art in particular with his heavy use of symbols and bold use of color.
Wayne's goal is to challenge the viewer of his art to see and think in a different way. Though he believes that art should have a certain aesthetic appeal, for him, the meaning or the story behind it is also essential. He believes that there is a common thread in human nature and that if he can tap into that he's been successful.
For Wayne, "There is nothing like uninhibited, passionate, intoxicating art."
