tropical depression
i have lived in the tropics lying almost naked on white sand baked in the atomic gold of the unwinking sun until i was so dark i was taken for a native
i have lived in the tropics flitting home barely clothed through narrow lanes after songbird nights to shed the grime of smoke and tourists in the frangipani air
i have lived in the tropics floating naked while caressed in the womb of a sea so radiantly blue it wiped visual memory making one forget any other color
all this notwithstanding i was still a stranger in those tropics where i lived the seductive sun and scent and sea could not dissolve the stiff salt-caked patina of my northern soul
i could not shed my me-ness not even for the baptism of those blue waters and the silence of a sun that kept all secrets safe and the perfumed air that smothered all transgressions
my natural habitat is not those tropics where i lived transplanted but not rooted not brilliant sun but seabound fog not sweet perfume but salttang breeze not the calmly brilliant sea ultramarine but outlaw whitecaps riding an ocean of bottlegreen ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
