Artist Statement
I started drawing since the age of five years old, and started art lessons at the Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado in middle school. I was notorious for making doodles all over my study notes in class all through my school years!
In high school, my geometry teacher commented, (upon seeing a hard-edged geometric abstract painting I was working on in art class), "I can't understand how you can draw a perfect circle free-hand on a canvas, and at the same time have the trouble you do in my geometry class!"
My father was a math teacher, and I really despised math! It wasn't until I began to use math in everyday calculations at work, that my right and left brain decided to co-operate with each other. After that, math became useful to me.
I emphasized in sculpture as a Studio Art major in college and most of my work was in ceramic clay. I loved to sculpt animals of all kinds, and I was very good at realism to abstract to non-objective work, which made my professors happy as most of them liked contemporary art.
After I finished school, like most young people, I had to make a living. I was offered a job in a new hospital setting up the Pharmacy department and working as their first technician. Pharmacy became my bread and butter, and I enjoyed the challenge of working in a hospital and constantly learning new things.
I never stopped being an artist, and found many avenues to free-lance, designing logo's and drawing ads for local businesses. I eventually purchased a kiln and began to produce some of my still favorite pieces, a few I still have. Others were sold through local shops. I didn’t have the luxury of Internet advertising.
An admirer once told me my sculptures reminded her of some of the bronze pieces at Brook Green Gardens in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. Indeed, I frequented the gardens whenever I could, and I am sure I was influenced by many of America's most influential artists! My favorite American sculptor being Anna Hyatt Huntington. I imagined that someday I could produce a bronze and donate it to be placed in a nook somewhere in the gardens.
Most of the pieces I produced until the past ten years were sculpted in ceramic clay, but as I moved around so much keeping up with my husband's career choices, it became necessary to sculpt with a substance that was more moveable and lightweight. My first few large projects were done in papier-mâché. Two of these, a mountain lion and a horse, I entered in a Colorado Business for the Arts show in Denver and won the top People's Choice Award for one and honorable mention for the other, of which I am very proud. I have won awards for my work in every show I have entered.
Still moving around, and with my aquiring a computer and discovery of eBay, I decided to try polymer clay for smaller and easier to ship pieces. Being a dog lover I decided to sculpt some of my favorite toy breeds and was delighted to find that they were snatched up in auctions on eBay, and I have shipped them to customers all over the world. I gradually switched to an epoxy sculpting medium which I liked even better than the polymer for it’s durability. It has allowed me to sculpt ever-larger pieces, and I am modeling several of these to be cast in limited editions.
One might ask why am I selling on Image Kind since this site sells mostly two-dimensional work? I would answer that a sculptor should be able to construct his or her ideas in the two-dimensional form , and I have been a painter and designer for many years too! The photographs I take of my own work are wonderful to apply to items found on this and other websites, so I am happy to advertise myself in every way I can.
In 2010 I was contacted by Hoflin Publishing Company to be the featured artist for their Papillon Yearly Annual. love and keep three adorable Papillons, and they are one of my favorite breeds.
