Vincent came to me in a dream again, and this time we were not in New Haven but in Amherst, Massachusetts. It was a beautiful spring evening and we were walking in the almost deserted downtown enjoying the sunset and talking of the inconsequential. Although I knew he could be opinionated and vehement, tonight Vincent was thoughtful and somewhat preoccupied. He was carrying a sketchpad and fiddling nervously with a pencil as we walked. We turned down a side street away from the main center of town and soon came to a covered alleyway demarcating two large buildings. Vincent gestured, indicating he'd like to explore it, so we entered the alley. I was enjoying the moodiness of the half-light with the sunset shining in at the other end, but Vincent was galvanized. I suppose it was something about the somewhat eerie atmosphere in that tunneled alley. He stopped and began to draw, his eyes darting from side to side, hardly glancing down at the paper. I kept walking, not wishing to intrude on his concentration, and had almost reached the other end of the alleyway by the time he stopped. I stood by the arched doorway that gave out into a parking lot, waiting for him. When he reached my side he gave a rare smile, and, pointing to a restaurant across the parking lot, suggested we have some dinner.Vincent grew animated over dinner and regaled me with stories about some of his acquaintances in France. He clearly mixed with all kinds, and one particular story about a shoemaker made me laugh out loud. Perhaps I actually laughed in my sleep, because that's when I woke up. I wondered if I would have another dream about him anytime soon; I was not disappointed. Several nights later there was Vincent, walking through my unconscious as if he belonged there. In that dream I ran into him near the post office in the center of the small town where I live. He had a package under his arm and was clearly about to mail it off somewhere.
