A couple of weeks after I got Vincent's belated butwelcome Christmas card, another message from him was waiting for me in the mailbox. Still missing his actual presence, I was happy to see the envelope addressed in his familiar handwriting. Inside the envelope was a new card, a brilliantly colorful painting of golden flowers, surrounded by the partial outline of a jagged heart, on a red background. I flipped the card open. There was no salutation; Vincent launched right into his message.Helas! I have just found another card, long overdue. I hope you will forgive me the lateness. The seas of life have been rough, at times almost unnavigable; this is, no doubt, the reason I have been unable to come and sit by you in the evening twilight.'As I read these words my heart grew heavy, for I knew Vincent's dark times were very black indeed. Perhaps if we had been able to visit I could've been the one to help steady him, performing the same office for him as he had so many times for me.'Anyway,' he went on, 'here is a small token of affection for Valentine's Day, long past, but love is such a wonderful, powerful force it should be celebrated every day.'I knew Vincent had known romantic love, had been wildly, unashamedly enwrapped in its gossamer yet seemingly infrangible folds several times. This was followed by, 'Never be afraid to love; never be afraid to accept it.'At this I paused. As always, it seemed as if he were reading my mind, for in the distance of love's remove, I have become wary of becoming entangled again. The note continued,'It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done! I close with my best wishes for your health and happiness, and the hope that we may yet again meet to share the same space at the same time in friendship.'It was signed, simply, 'V.'
