Artist Statement Carmen Costello is a self-taught artist. She works around traditional and experimental techniques, adjusting, inflecting

and twisting given forms to create new images. Working in a state of intuitive action, creating a riotous display of brilliant colors,

choppy swirling bush/hand strokes and abbreviated figures and symbols that invoke ancient modes of dance and ritual.

Many of her works address timeless and fundamental issues of freedom, self-determination, gender and the environment.

Carmen's paintings are windows into a quintessential and unassimilated form of the individual life cycle, the seasons

and stages of life where the only constant is change.

Just as her art career as an artist was taking hold in Austin, Texas, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and

spent the next year battling the disease and after a double mastectomy and months of chemo and radiation therapy,

she won the battle and moved to California.

There she found herself working with youth and connecting with the community through art and went on to teach art

to hundreds of Bay area children over the following seven years. She volunteered and ran inner city art programs,

as well as worked for one of the largest non- profits in the bay area as an art specialist developing the arts programs

for YMCA in Berkeley and South Berkeley as well as their camp in Gualala and working with the San Francisco YMCA

Jones Gulch Family Camp. She ran independent art workshops in both the Berkeley and Oakland school districts and

worked with the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department bringing quality art programs to inner city youth.

After seven years of working and living in a city environment and having little time to pursue her art

and a recurrence of cancer, she decided to move to Guam.

Life in Guam was slow and there was plenty of time to paint and also time to work with the youth in the

community as well as adults with disabilities.

Just as she was finding her groove and acclimating to island life until she suffered

congestive heart failure the by product of chemo therapy, radiation and genetics, she

had to relocate to the united states where the health care is available to treat her condition.

Now residing in San Diego she rejoins her family and is beginning a new chapter in life proving

yet again the one constant in life is change. It's a small world and a big life!
