Description Watercolor, 25 x 18;The Woolworth Building, neo-Gothic style, has 60 stories, making it the tallest building in the world at the time of its completion in 1913 and remained the title for 17 years. The building won widespread acclaim for its pioneering steel-frame structure. Though it is no match in height for later skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building (1930), the Woolworth Building was regarded as a model of construction for years, and remains a favorite sight on the New York City skyline.Cass Gilbert, selected as the architect, brought the grandeur and authority of a civic building to a corporate tower. Ornate exterior cladding of cream terra cotta with blue and yellow glazed accents evokes guildhall architecture of France and England. Slim vertical piers accentuate the versatility of the building. A green patina copper roof replete with gargoyles and tracery tops the building.
