Do you remember those special times in your life? The first time you met your best friend or had your first crush? Fo me, one of my special memories is when I lived in a unique apartment during high school. Imagine a place where you can feel comfortable expressing freely how you feel and creating a piece of art that tells the world your emotions. This apartment was full of life and passion; the environment helped me to be the most creative I have ever been in my life. After middle school, I surprisingly tested into a high school in another city fours hours away from my home. That was in 1995 and I was sixteen years old. This place, Taipei, is the capital of Taiwan and the biggest city in my country. For my family, and most of my friends, it was a big deal. People do not usually move to another city unless they are married or in college. So, for me to be independent was a challenge at an early age. At that time, I didn’t think much about it, I just appreciated that I had found a school that I liked and was accepted to. Back then, to go to high school, you had to pass a difficult test. For this school, I also had to pass an additional art test. After all of this, I was on my way to this new adventure. During the beginning of my adventure, I was helped by my friends to find a temporary place to live with a roommate. I did not like my roommate because he was very strange, so I decided to live by myself. The next place I lived was right behind a McDonald’s and was very close to school. I thought this would be very convenient for walking to school, but the landlord was terrible. After that, I moved back home for a short time to get my health back. When I was well again, I moved back to Taipei. I found a special place that was owned by a very nice family. They charged me a fair price and were generous to me. The location was isolated in the valley of the mountains. It had very good scenery and there was river outside of my window. The apartment had a private bathroom, which was very unusual and usually more expensive. I lived in this apartment for two years and it was the most amazing time for me because I could be creative and paint freely. The quality time with the soul of art in the apartment took me away from the normalness of everyday life. Every time I think about it, I feel my soul traveling back to that time of inspiration. During that time, I was very busy and focused on school. Almost everyday, I had either academic homework or art homework. For our midterm, we had to turn in paintings from the semester and talk about them in front of the class. We had to paint a certain sized painting and have a certain number of them. It was a lot of work. Since I didn’t have access to a television and also because I was very into music at that time, I spent all of my free time listening to music and painting. It was amazing how time would go so fast when I was working on my art. Many times, I would spend seven hours after school painting, but I didn’t feel tired. At that moment, I felt that I was traveling through time and thinking about many things as I painted. It was the quietness of this apartment that isolated me from the outside and gave me this very special feeling to focus on what I was doing. That time in my life was filled with dedication, humbleness and an excitement for learning. I was passionate and genuine with art. My memories of this time are very special and I feel blessed when I think about it. Now, I am living another new adventure that will create new memories for me. But, I will always have the memory of my special apartment in my head so that I can go back to that place in my thoughts to get the same passion and focus I once had.
