Current Gallery: batiks ( piece)
The Art of Batik is about 2000 years old. Batik is usually created on fabric stretched onto a screen. I use paper, and instead of immersing it, as you would the screen into a dye bath, I brush, or sponge the paper with watercolors. Melted wax is painted onto the dry surface, to resist the paint, or dye. This is the drawing process of the image, and once applied it is permanent, so that leaves little room for error. Colors are applied in stages starting from lightest to darkest, and as they dry they create a spontaneous effect. When the process has been completed, the wax is removed by placing the batik between newsprint, and pressing with a warm iron. The newsprint absorbs the wax, leaving the finished image crisp and vivid. The element of surprise is most rewarding.
