Rats in the Attic
Attics... they hold what once was fresh and new, meaningful, important; things no longer wanted daily but too valuable to discard Or do they? Sometimes attics are nothing but junkyards, repositories for what we think should be saved, even when the relevancy of those things once treasured has long since faded to a whisper, a footnote to a former life. Attics are homes to tiny predators, indiscriminate about what they gnaw. They'll eat your wedding gown as soon as all those old shoes you'll never wear again. The mind is an attic of sorts. Here we cling to the memories of all manner of things best forgotten, junk cluttering the space meant for the true treasures of our Book of Days. My attic is a mess; I am a jackdaw, a hoarder of everything I have picked up along the roadside. Feral creatures roam there, nibbling both the treasures and the trash. But every time I climb that ladder with bucket and mop I manufacture endless reasons for why now is not a good time to scrub out the irrelevant. I need an intervention, but have not yet encountered the right one for the job. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
