Artist Statement After Sultan Agung, the Sultanate of Mataram was declining because of force battle inside the sultanate. To aggravate things, VOC (Dutch East India Company) abused the force battle to expand its control. At the top of the clash, the Mataram Sultanate was part in two focused around the Treaty of Giyanti of February 13, 1755: Yogyakarta Sultanate and Surakarta Sunanate.

The Giyanti Treaty specified Pangeran Mangkubumi as Sultan of Yogyakarta with the title of Sampeyan Dalem Ingkang Sinuwun Kanjeng Sultan Hamengkubuwono Senopati Ingalaga Abdul Rakhman Sayidin Khalifatullah Panatagama (His Majesty, The Sultan-Carrier for Chief Warrior, Servant and the Most Gracious, Cleric and Caliph that Safeguards the Religion).

Throughout the period of Dutch occupation there were two realms, the Yogyakarta Sultanate (Kasultanan Yogyakarta) and the more modest Pakualaman Duchy/ Principality (Kadipaten Pakualaman).

The Dutch Colonial Government masterminded the completing self-sufficient government toward oneself, organized under a political contract. At the point when the Indonesian freedom was broadcasted, the rulers, the Sultan of Yogyakarta and Prince of Pakualaman made a presentation they would get to be some piece of the Republic of Indonesia. Those two areas were brought together to structure the Yogyakarta Special Region and the sultan turned into the Governor of Yogyakarta and the Prince of Pakualaman as the bad habit senator; both were dependable to the President of Indonesia. The Special Region of Yogyakarta was made after the autonomy war finished and sanctioned on August 3, 1950.

In doing the nearby government organization it considers three standards: decentralization, deconcentration and support. The common government completes the obligations and powers of the focal government, while on other hand completing its self-governing obligations and powers. The Regional Government comprises of the Head of the Region and the Legislative Assembly of the Region. Such development ensures great collaboration between the Head of Region and the Legislative Assembly of Region so as to attain a sound local government organization. The Head of the Special Region of Yogyakarta has got obligation as the Head of the Territory and titled as a Governor.

The principal Governor was the late Hamengkubuwono IX, Sultan of Yogyakarta and proceeded by HRH. Paku Alam VIII as acting senator until Hamengkubuwono X rose in 1998. Not at all like alternate heads of districts in Indonesia, the legislative head of the Special Region of Yogyakarta has the benefit or exceptional status of not being sure to the time of position nor the necessities and method for arrangement. On the other hand, in doing their obligations, they have the same power and obligations.
