Description This fine example of Conopholis americana was found on an early May walk under the shaded canopy of old growth Oak, Hickory, and Beech trees in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, USA.This interesting forest plant does not have chlorophyll and therefore relies on its host - the Oak - for nourishment by parasitizing the tree's roots.Unique and beautiful member of the Eastern woods forest floor nonetheless.Common names include Bear Corn, as titled, plus Squaw Root and Cancer Root.Fruit from this plant is an important early Spring food for Black bears. A portion of all profits derived from the sale of these prints will be donated to Southside Virginia Wildlife Center, Danville, Virginia.
