Artist Statement The ebb and flow of light and the subsequent moods produced is the foundation of my photographs. I find the inflection of light fascinating. In the interplay of brightness and contrast a simple jovial scene can be transformed into an ominous threat.

I primarily work with film, both color and black and white. I develop and process the black and white photos myself. It is extremely rewarding to be part of the entire creative process. It remains much the same as it did at its creation over a hundred years ago. The resistance of “modernization” in this medium gives me the satisfaction of creating a piece of art that was not generated by a computer.

My cameras range from a Nikon N80 to 1941 Exakta. Vintage cameras hold an appeal to me because the photos have a quality about them that Photoshop can not reproduce. They come with the added bonus of being interesting conversation pieces. I have been introduced to a world rich with history and stories because of my fascination with antique cameras.

I believe that the art of photography is a symbiosis of emotion and moment. It forces me to stop, take in a particular scene and analyze emotionally what is taking place. It has allowed me to be an active participant in the world around me. Due to a wide variety of interests this medium allows me to capture them all in a shot, a photo, a moment.
