Description Makena Beach also known as Big Beach (and the locals also know it as Break Neck Beach). We dont like to share this claim to fame title with the tourist though. It is located in South Maui. It is a gorgeous white sand beach. The sand is soft and the beach is very long. I would guess over a mile in one direction. It is fun to watch the local young men boogie board and do their tricks. The ocean can get rough here and people have been injuried including a friend of mine who broke his leg. He couldnt make up his mind to run or dive. The water rushed in with force and the sand buried his leg with sand. The wave pushed him one way and his leg bent the opposite direction. Snap. Remember never turn your back on the ocean. Run and dive under the wave or make sure you have plenty of time to run forward back to the beach. The water is pristine and clean. It is one of my favorite beaches on Maui. My son and his young teenage friends love it here it too because of the fun waves. The water is the prettiest blue. There was talk about building a hotel and resort on this beach. I hope this never happens. We need our beach parks untouched. Too many have been built upon. Hence the name of this painting and wanting to remind others we need to preserve and protect our parks and beaches for future generations. However, they did build a few lifeguard stations on the beach year 2009. That is a welcome structure and good thing for the tourist. To view more of my images you can visit my website to see what original oil paintings are for sale: www.mccartneyfineart.comMy work is on display at the Link2 Fine Art Gallery, Danville, CA; Art on the Lane, Danville, CA; and Haleakala Trading Company, Kihei, Maui, HI
Kathy McCartney, Kihei Member Since June 2010 Artist Statement Aloha and thank you for visiting my gallery!
My love for the arts and the tropics was formed during the early years of my childhood. I had the privilege of living on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii with my US Naval family. We lived in Kaneohe and spent many precious moments on the breathtaking beaches nearby: Bellows Beach, Kailua, and Lanikai.
My paintings are inspired by my love or aloha. I desire to capture the tropical feeling from the pristine Hawaiian landscape to the South Pacific atolls. My aspiration is to capture the beauty of the land and the romance of the local people. This is a magical place.
I make the time to create! It is my way of escaping the everyday life and to transcend to the ultimate peace. I hope the images I capture on canvas inspire the viewer to preserve the natural beauty of this planet, so we can all continue to share and experience these special places and insure that they exist for future generations.
My work has sold within the United States and internationally. My work has sold in California at Link2 Fine Art Gallery and Art on The Lane. On the island of Maui at Haleakala Trading Company, Sargent's Fine Art, Raphael Gallery, and Maui Hands.
