Artist Statement Born in 1967 in Falls Church, Virginia, Dr. D'Arcy was raised by her mother, an artist and decorator, and her father, a journalist and “failed cartoonist.” While she began drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil, she never truly considered it as an occupation, but mused with the ideas of teaching or writing. By 9th grade in High School however, she was drawn to science, and went on to get her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Wake Forest University. As her studies in science progressed, her art was pushed further and further away, until, in graduate school, it pushed back. As a graduate student, she was tired, starving and miserable, which was the perfect environment to flourish as an artist. She began taking evening classes at a local community organization where she studied figure drawing, jewelry fabrication, printmaking, and painting. It was very much like learning art from scratch. With this new perspective, she has gone forward with her art in new directions. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her husband and her three stepchildren.
