Description The common name of the genus is bird of paradise flower, because of a supposed resemblance of its flowers to the bird of paradise. In South Africa it is commonly known as a 'crane' flower. The flowers are produced in a horizontal inflorescence emerging from a stout spathe. They are pollinated by sunbirds, which use the spathe as a perch when visiting the flowers; the weight of the bird on the spathe opens it to release the pollen onto the bird's feet, which is then deposited on the next flower it visits.

Artist Statement Welcome to my gallery. Nice to meet you! I have diverse interests in nature and scenic photography. I enjoy traveling and always have my Nikon SLR digital camera with me to add to my gallery! I devoted 30 years as a firefighter and paramedic, now I teach future emergency responders, and I am a safety & health consultant / instructor for business and industry. I am also a Simulation Lab Coordinator for our local hospital (we use human manikins so healthcare professionals can perform various medical procedures and practice skills), and I am a Set Paramedic for films that are shot in our area (Oceans 11, Extreme Makeover - Philadelphia, Transformers, etc.)

I live in the Lehigh Valley which is composed of the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, PA (and all the surrounding suburbs). Very close to the Pocono Mountain area, one hour North of Philadelphia. We have a lot of flora and fauna to photograph here as well as our surrounding states of NY, NJ, DE, MD and VA, so stop by often - I'm always adding to the gallery -- even when it's COLD! ;{) Any suggestions, comments or if you just want to say "Hi" - drop me a line in the "Send Message" area.
