Artist Statement I started painting in 2003. I had taken several workshops prior to beginning to paint full-time. I didn't know when I was a kid or an adult, for that matter, that I wanted to be an artist. I have always been "crafty". Would try to do most anything. Painting, however, seemed way out of my reach. In 2000, my son David, 18, was killed by a drunk driver. I believe I would never had started to paint if my life had taken a different path. When you have experienced the worst possible thing any person can live through, failing at trying to paint seemed kinda pale. So, thru the encouragement of my husbands aunt, I began painting classes with an amazingly talented artist in Danville, Virginia. There were about 8 or so of us in the class. I was by far the youngest, by about 20 years. The class and my fellow artists propelled me to keep painting. Failure was not an option. I have been "on my own" for several years now and have tried several different styles of painting. I believe I have found my passion, my niche. I currently rent studio space in Martinsville VA. There are several other artists that rent space in the same studio. The building is an old Woolworth building. Talk about recycle! It is the perfect place to paint. Painting in a studio is so much more productive than painting at home. Our studio is open to the public and it is a treat to have company to talk to about painting.
