Description This was painted in the 14th week of my 52-week commitment to finish one painting every week for a year. I was spending a lot of time that month thinking about what it meant to be brave. There were some things challenging me at work (I'm an Academic and Career Counselor at a College) and I was finding myself pulling away from certain patterns I had in my life that I was no longer interested in (but having a hard time allowing myself to change). She will always be a reminder to me that it's ok to make changes in your life no matter how big and bold they may feel at the time. To go for it if the whispers are calling you.
Karen Kohn, Madison, WI Member Since December 2016 Artist Statement My mom introduced me to painting when I was in college but I didn't feel I had the time to explore a hobby on top of my studies and social life.
A few years before she passed away, I thankfully took up painting more regularly which gave us the opportunity to spend many weekends together enjoying each other's company while we painted.
Over the years, I've explored many different mediums and creative processes such as polymer clay, scrapbooking, watercolor, mixed media, etc. and ultimately discovered a love for mixed media primarily using paper, acrylics and watercolor crayons.
More recently I decided to get more serious after developing a "Life Plan" in July 2016 where I decided to commit myself to developing a style and series of work. My current life plan consists of the following goals....finish at least one painting every week and sketch for at least one hour a week for the next 52 weeks. Just setting some simple goals really helped me become a lot more deliberate about my creative life. I'm currently developing six different painting series including Animal Angels, Spirit Angels, Flower Girls, Seasonal Girls, Butterfly Girls and Quirky Birds.
Thanks for checking out my gallery. I hope you enjoy the images and stories associated with each painting.
